8 Fun 4th of July Activities - Red Apple Reading

What is your family doing this year for the 4th of July? Whether you’re spending time at the lake, grilling burgers or watching fireworks, we hope you will take time out for some teachable moments with your kids. Red Apple Reading has 8 fun Fourth of July learning activities for your children to enjoy this Independence Day!

  1. Red, White and Blue Sorting – Sorting activities not only help preschool children develop their fine motor skills, but they also teach them the different ways items can be categorized. This Independence Day, set up a sorting station filled with different red, white and blue items and let your child discover all the different ways the objects can be sorted.
  2. Patriotic Collage – Let your kiddo create a patriotic collage for the Fourth. Stars, American flags, red, white, and blue shapes, and pictures of people in the military can all be arranged and glued according to your child’s wishes.
  3. Learn the States and Capitals – The 4th of July is a great time to teach your little one the states and capitals of our country. There’s no better way to commit a list to memory than with a catchy song. Check out this YouTube video of a fun state capital song – you’ll find yourself humming this familiar tune along with your child!
  4. Create a Patriotic Puzzle – Discovery Education has a free puzzle generating tool that allows anyone to design their own word search puzzles. Why not create a patriotic puzzle for your kids to tackle while you’re grilling the burgers this July 4th?
  5. Make State Flags –We’ve come a long way from the thirteen small colonies that declared their independence from Great Britain in 1776! Make miniature flags of each of our 50 great states and attach them to a wall map of America. Your kiddos will enjoy the crafting and the learning!
  6. Stars, Stripes and Shapes – Have your little one construct an American flag during the holiday. Cut out red and white stripes, white stars, and a blue square and then let your kiddo put all the shapes in the right order to create their very own flag.
  7. Read a Book – Red Apple Reading believes that one of the best ways to celebrate a holiday is with a good book! The 4th of July Story by Alice Dalgliesh provides children with an excellent explanation of our country’s birthday.
  8. American Alphabetizing – Take a look at this 4th of July alphabetizing freebie. Kids will put Independence Day vocabulary words in ABC order with this fun activity from the Teachers Pay Teachers website.

No matter how you decide to spend the holiday weekend, Red Apple Reading wishes you and your family a happy and safe Independence Day!
