sunWhat kind of feelings does the word “summer” conjure up for you? For most of us, summer brings to mind fun days spent swimming, playing, and basking in the sun. Summer can be a magical time to make great memories, but it is important to be aware of the specific dangers that accompany being out in the sun. Today we will take a look at some easy ways to keep our kiddos sun safe; thus, helping to ensure a happy summer for your family!

Apply Sunscreen
One of the wonderful perks of summer vacation is long days spent playing in the sun! While there is nothing wrong with getting some sun (after all, it is a great source of vitamin D!), we want to make sure our kids are not getting too much. Of course, it is important to remember to regularly apply sunscreen with a SPF of 15 or higher. Don’t forget you want your sunscreen to protect against both UVA and UVB rays. Also, be sure to periodically reapply. Click here to see what the Mayo Clinic advices concerning sunscreen use.

Hydrate
No matter the time of year, we should always encourage our kiddos to drink water. This is especially critical in the summer months when children tend to be more active. The amount of water your child should consume depends on many factors; but  kidshealth.org recommends drinking enough to satisfy their thirst plus a little extra if they are exercising or sick. Remember to also offer your kiddo fruits and veggies throughout the day as these also contain water!

Find Some Shade
Does your little one want to be outside all day? If so, make sure he is spending some of that time in a shady area away from direct sunlight. Not only will spending some time in the shade help to cool your child off, it will also help prevent sunburn.

Put a Lid On It!
In other words, have your kiddo wear a hat if she will be spending a lot of time in the sun. Wearing a hat can help protect our faces from getting too much sun exposure. By the way, if it gets really hot, remove the hat, soak with water and replace it on your kid’s noggin. Her hair might get messed up, but it will help to keep her cool!

Take Periodic Breaks
If possible, bring in your child periodically throughout the day to rest and cool off. Try scheduling these rest times during the hottest part of the day as these hours can be particularly draining. Of course, there is nothing better than settling in with a book during these indoor rest periods! This is a great time for your child to take a break from his actual adventures and experience adventures via the characters in his favorite books.

Red Apple Reading hopes you and your family are enjoying your summer vacation. Enjoy the sunshine, but remember to keep safe and cool!
