Fifty years ago on August 28, 1963, Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his powerful, “I have a dream”, speech from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington. M.L.K. Jr. was passionate about ending racism in America. There is so much we can learn from this great civil rights leader – one being to pursue our dreams. As adults, we often think about our goals and dreams; but do we ever stop to consider what our own kids are passionate about? Red Apple Reading would like to suggest 3 ways you can nurture your child’s passions and dreams.
1. Notice – In order to nurture your kiddo’s passion, you first must know what she is passionate about. Asking yourself a few questions will help you determine what interests your child. Start with the following:
- What does my child talk about?
- What is my child’s favorite subject?
- What books does my child read?
- What does my child do in her spare time?
By simply taking a little time to observe and notice what excites your kid, you have taken the first step in helping her achieve her dream.
2. Encourage – Once you discover what your kiddo is passionate about, you can then begin to encourage him to pursue his dream. The following are two easy and meaningful ways parents can encourage their little ones:
- Speak Words of Affirmation – a little praise goes a long way! Make sure your child hears you say on a regular basis that you believe in her.
- Provide Resources – Let’s face it, without adequate resources a person can only do so much to pursue their passion. For example, if your kid wants to be an artist, you can make sure he has at least some basic art supplies. The two of you could also visit the library and check out books about great artists and their paintings. Be creative and put a little thought into ways you can provide helpful resources to your little one.
3. Connect – Another way you can help your kid pursue his dream is by connecting him with like-minded people.
- Find a Mentor – Locate an adult or older kid who can be a mentor to your child. Someone with the same passion and a little more life experience will provide the needed guidance and support your kiddo needs.
- Explore Clubs/Organizations – If your child has a passion, chances are she is not the only one with that particular interest. For instance, if your youngster has a heart for animals, see if she can volunteer at the local animal shelter once a week. Check out what clubs and organizations are available in your community for your kiddo.
Your child is a future leader in the community. Make sure you are doing all you can to facilitate the pursuit of his dream!
